Abstract The surface charge accumulation on the basin insulator is a particular problem in high‐voltage direct current (HVDC) gas insulated switchgears (GIS) and transmission lines (GIL), which restricts development application of extra/ultra (EHV/UHV) technology. distribution anti‐flashover performance are closely related to shape. To obtain optimal insulator, shape optimisation model based artificial bee colony algorithm was established, minimisation objective functions capacitive (initial) electric field resistive (steady‐state) were respectively constructed. results two calculated, before after evaluated compared using simulation model. indicated that can significantly inhibit accumulation, optimised reduce normal make tangential more uniform, maximum be reduced by 10%; achieve similar results, but requires computational resources.
